Science Fiction Thrillers — Science Meets Science Fiction
Many years ago, I began to take notes for my Science Fiction series Prometheus. This series is about the end of the world — literally the physical obliteration of our planet. When I started out, my main principle was for there to be no happy ending for Earth. Earth is toast. The Prometheus series explores how humanity responds to the certain knowledge that in 700 years, our home planet will be no more.
Think the world wouldn’t care about something that will happen in 700 years? Well you’d be wrong. The opportunity to be known for all time as the savior of humanity from certain disaster is just too seductive for the Amanda Lexington, President of the United States, to resist.
I will seek to understand how we evolve over the centuries as the end nears. How does this knowledge affect religion, crime, money, politics, and society in general? How will humanity respond?
I’ll give you a clue: Humanity’s response sucks.
The Prometheus Series will be comprised of six books running over a twelve-hundred year arc – from 1562 to 2713.
The High Concept
In the year 2025, upon discovering that an approaching sun-sized star will destroy the Sun and all the inner planets in 700 years, eminent scientist Dr. Marissa Blake struggles to prevent impulsive US President Amanda Lexington from squandering humanity’s best chance at survival.
The Third Stone Series tells the story of how society evolves over the next seven centuries, knowing they will be Earth’s last. Book One – Prometheus Blue – is set in the near future where three opposing forces driven by politics, science and religion, clash in a desperate struggle to shape humanity’s destiny.
In my first book – Prometheus Blue – readers will learn how awesome stars really are. Think it would be easy to destroy a star? You’ll see exactly how tough they are as I weave the sciences of gravity, nuclear physics, explosive power and rocket-drive technology to build my case of just how insanely difficult humanity’s greatest challenge will be to overcome. The second book of the series – Prometheus Red – picks up where Blue ended and completes the near future timeline of the series.
My earliest inspirations are Isaac Asimov’s Foundation Series, Frank Herbert and almost anything by Arthur C. Clarke. I also appreciate the works of Andy Weir for the hard science (and adventure too!) and BV Larson for the utter outrageousness of his ideas.
Click the link in the book description below for excerpts. I hope you like what you see. Now that Blue and Red are essentially complete, I’ll be seeking representation to get published. If you want to see how humanity’s greatest challenge unfolds, please let me know in the Comments sections in the blog posts or the excerpt from Prometheus Blue, attached to this page.
Psychological Crime Thrillers
When I wrote the first two books of the Prometheus series, one of my characters cried out for more story. Maddy Stone plays a pivotal role in Prometheus Red, but I wanted to know: just who is this warrior woman and how did she evolve?
In Making Diamonds, Maddy’s journey is tortured — from stripping in Hell’s Kitchen to the highest echelons of Park Avenue society. Her mentor is a career grifter who runs a team of remarkable female grifters. These women target the most vile, narcissistic men of Wall Street and Madison Avenue. Cheaters, wife beaters, white-collar thieves, immoral traders and brokers who would sell their grandmother to a brothel if it would get them more money, more prestige, more women.
It’s a perfect home for Maddy, who loves to take these mopes down.
But her deadly past is always just around the corner to haul her back to that pit she crawled out of. Where her worst nightmares are one mistake away.
It was great fun to learn about grifters and how they pluck their victims clean. When I approached the Anatomy of a Con, I decided that my gang of grifters (the “Diamond Girls”) would mostly eschew the most recent internet and cyber cons, reasoning that most people are wise to those now and the FBI is really, really good at hunting down those perps if they happen to live in country. So I decided to feature the old cons, from the 1920’s and ’30’s. They’re so much fun to research and, I hope, to read about. When you put the old cons together with a thoroughly modern group of beautiful and talented women dedicated to taking down the most striving narcissistic men in Finance and Real Estate, and you’ve got the building blocks for a fun ride.
See my blog entry Anatomy of a Con. You’ll get a good flavor of the outlandish and inventive cons of a hundred years past. What’s old is new again!
